Have you wondered how and why it was so easy for some companies to successfully shift to remote working during the covid-19 pandemic lockdown? On the other hand, some companies are struggling up till now to smoothly transit to work-from-home and remote work. Find out the secret behind the success of those who encountered little or no difficulty in their transition.

Secret #1: Heavy Investment in Cloud-based Technologies

One of the secrets to smooth transition to remote working for many companies is technology. A study showed that a good number of these companies most-likely invested in innovative technologies long before the pandemic hit. Some of those technologies include file-sharing and storage tools, communication tools and other technologies that allow smooth access regardless of where an employee is working from.

Secret #2: Value Placement on Openness and Flexibility Culture

In addition to investing heavily on innovative technologies, companies that transited seamlessly to remote workforce operated a culture of flexibility and openness. In essence, these companies possibly test-run working-from-home model from time to time even before the outbreak of the virus. They were flexible with their work models.

On the contrary, those still struggling to work remotely in a successful manner were possibly rigid with their work models and structure. Their teams were restricted to work in an office and within specific time frames.

It’s a hard lesson though, but one that teaches the importance of fostering a work culture and model that discourages micromanagement of employees. Instead, a company should rather pursue and establish a culture that promotes flexibility and responsibility-sharing.

Secret #3: Trust and Confidence on Team Members

Another trait of companies that had no problem transiting to remote work is trust. Technology was part of it, but trust is also a major factor in this success equation. In fact, trust seems to be the biggest factor here.

In essence, these companies have learnt to allow their team members take on projects without the supervisors monitoring them every inch of the way. And, overtime, they have seen that these employees deliver and even exceed expected outcomes just on time. So, it was easy allowing those employees to work from home as soon as government ordered a lockdown.

This is another big lesson for companies and managers who try to micromanage everything and not let team members exercise some control over assigned projects. Every company aiming to achieve true success should imbibe the culture of trust, especially during this season of working virtually.

Once a company focuses on these secrets right now, it will have no problem transiting to a remote workforce successfully.
