Are you Holding Your Business Back by Being Unwilling to Outsource Tasks?

Talk show host, Kristen White, and I recently addressed the challenges entrepreneurs face when dealing with expanding businesses and growing workloads, along with the difficulties many have with delegating tasks. Because entrepreneurs are doers by nature, they often believe no one can perform a task as well as they can. Does this remind you of anyone?

Are you an entrepreneur who finds it difficult to let go and let others? As a result of the tendency to be in full control without the relief offered by delegating some of your tasks you might hold yourself back, often to the extent of sabotaging your business.

I know you care about your business and are doing your best to make good choices. I get that sometimes it’s easier to do something yourself than to train someone else to do it. But in the long run (or maybe even the short run) the cost to your business will ultimately be measured by your loss of income and lack of free time.

By refusing to delegate even simple tasks, you risk exhausting your energy—energy you could be using to develop ideas that will generate more income for your business. The strategy of keeping everything close to home can work against you. It’ll fill your schedule with tasks that could be easily accomplished by a virtual assistant (VA) or outsourced to a professional whose basic skill set lies in an area you may struggle with.

Let’s use social media marketing tasks as an example to illustrate what I’m talking about.

Facebook Status Posting and Tweeting

It’s essential to keep up with social networking in today’s business world. Many people derive a huge part of their incomes from building their relationships on Facebook. If you rely on yourself to keep up on daily posting, interaction with others and researching the competition, you won’t have time for much else.

Social media is probably the easiest thing to outsource. Most entrepreneurs can write out posts in an hour or two and hand them over to a VA to schedule posts to both Facebook and Twitter.

Facebook Group Interaction – a VA can visit a list of groups provided by the entrepreneur to post links to relevant blogs or articles he/she has written, announcements, event promotion and more. Your VA can also be trained to identify potential joint venture partners, prospects and service providers.

Be willing to let go and let someone else perform the tasks that suck your time, keeping you from doing what you got into business for in the first place. You know what that is!
